The Hawaii Department of Transportation’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced that it will begin issuing the federally compliant REAL ID driver’s license and ID card on January 2, 2020.
The REAL ID Act sets the standards for the issuance of driver’s licenses and identification cards and prohibits federal agencies, like the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards.
The deadline to obtain a REAL ID license or ID card is October 1, 2020. After that date, you will need a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport, to fly within the United States or enter military bases and other federal facilities.
To get a REAL ID, you will need to bring the following documents to a Hawaii DMV office:
Proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or passport
Proof of Social Security number, such as a Social Security card or W-2 form
Two proofs of Hawaii residency, such as a utility bill or bank statement
