Getting Services from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission

You can access services provided by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. In addition to driver licensing and vehicle registration, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) is responsible for other motor vehicle services. New Jersey residents can visit the MVC website at NJ.gov/mvc for a wide range of services. It also provides information on in-person transactions. To book an appointment for an in-person service, see the Appointment Wizard on the MVC website.

The Appointment Wizard allows you to select the service you need, choose a location, and pick a date and time.

    Online Services

The MVC offers many services that can be completed online, including:

    • Renewing a standard driver’s license or non-driver ID
    • Renewing a REAL ID driver’s license or non-driver ID
    • Upgrading a probationary license
    • Paying surcharges and restoration fees
    • Ordering personalized, specialty, or dedicated license plates

To access these services, visit the Online Services page on the MVC website4.

    In-Person Services

For services that require an in-person visit, the MVC has numerous locations throughout New Jersey. Some of the most common in-person transactions include:

    • Obtaining a first-time driver’s license
    • Transferring an out-of-state driver’s license to New Jersey.
    • Upgrading to a REAL ID driver’s license
    • Registering a vehicle or renewing a registration
    • Taking a knowledge test or road test

To schedule an appointment for an in-person service, use the Appointment Wizard on the MVC website2. The Appointment Wizard allows you to select the service needed, choose a location, and pick a date and time.

    Mobile Unit Events

In addition to permanent MVC locations, the commission also operates mobile units that travel to various events and locations throughout the state. Mobile unit services include:

    • Issuing standard and REAL ID driver’s licenses and non-driver IDs
    • Registering vehicles and issuing license plates
    • Conducting knowledge tests and road tests

To find upcoming mobile unit events, check the MVC website or contact the commission directly.

By utilizing the online services and scheduling appointments for in-person transactions, New Jersey residents can efficiently complete their motor vehicle business with the MVC. For the most up-to-date information and to access services, visit the official NJ.gov/mvc website

    New Jersey MVC appointment

If you are a New Jersey resident who intends to apply for a new driver’s license, you might be asking, “Do I need an MVC (Motor Vehicle Commission) appointment?” Whether you will need an appointment for your MVC in order to get your new driver’s license will all depend on the situation around you — specifically, how long you have been driving and how many points you currently have on your driving record. If you have fewer than 5 total points on your driving record, in most cases, you don’t need to make a schedule to get your new driver’s license. But when you have over 5 points, it is usually advisable that you book it as it can help ease the MVC delay the day of your appointment.

The most frequent reason for making a prolonged appointment beforehand is so that your existing driver’s license or ID card will be preserved, leading to continued functioning as your proof of ID, should status changes (loss of current license) happen. Some of the common reasons that a person needs to contact the DMV to request a replacement ID card are if they forgot/left their current ID at home, recently gotten a new job, or have moved to a new state, and are therefore left with an invalid state-issued ID (the state may not accept the issued information if it has changed, etc.).

When you have already secured what is most valuable to you, one of the best approaches is to apply for a new ID card through the DMV. To catch up on changes up ahead, make an appointment with the DMV and check the DMV website or call (609) 340-5862. You should request a new ID card or license at your DMV appointment.
